Tarah and I spent last weekend celebrating the wedding of Nick and
Jenn in Washington. (Can’t you tell by the picture where we are? It
seriously started raining right after this photo.) We had a lot of
fun, as I had the honor of being Nick’s best man and planning the
bachelor party events, etc. It was fun to see the whole family too.
I have to say, that I am already looking forward to one of the other
cousins wedding so I can spend more time visiting with people and
relaxing, rather than planning and organizing. I certainly feel like
I didn’t get to visit with everyone like I would have liked. I hardly
got to talk to my dad the whole time I was home. Everyone was busy
though, we had a wedding to put on and it was all hands on deck. Even
Tarah and Katie S. had to go to the store and get the car decorations
right before the wedding. It was crazy, but it was fun.
Of course a wedding would not be a wedding without my Kautz family
throwing down on the dance floor. That family can dance. Even the DJ
asked if our family could come to every gig he had to work. He was a
pretty good DJ too, so I think that was a serious compliment.
So its official! Nick and Jenn are married! And congratulations to
Nick for his new job with the Washington Department of Natural
Resources. It should be a perfect fit.

Here is another photo for those of you that have been on me to post
another photo of Tarah. As you can see the end is in sight. The
little guy is kicking up a storm in there. Its been pretty cool to
watch this whole process, but I’m wondering if Tarah is going to miss
all the action in her belly when this kid is born. Granted he’ll be
in her arms and mine, but I can see now what a bond is created between
mother and child during this process. Pretty cool.
So we’re looking forward to Nick’s wedding on Sunday and seeing
everyone that we’ve missed.
Another mention to note is that Tarah recently had a baby shower in
Portland, hosted by our sister-in-law Courtney. I know many of you
have been following Courtney’s career online, but she did a wonderful
job, as you might expect, putting together a classy shower for all to
enjoy. You can see photos and some of her own commentary here: http://nesting-instincts.blogspot.com/2008/06/baby-meet-orange.html
Thanks Courtney!

My cousin Glenn and his girlfriend recently visited Tarah and I and
stayed with us for a couple of days. The time was too short, but
Glenn and I were able to go out surfing three different times, which
was awesome. The waves were pretty good too. Who would have thought
that one day Glenn and I would be sharing a wave down in California.
It was too cool. Granted Glenn was able to ride it longer, but I’m
working on catching up.
The picture is from our dinner out on Friday night at Carlitos in
Santa Barbara. The weather was unusually hot, which turned into
beautiful evenings over the whole weekend. So dining on the patio was
a must during our time together. Well I hope to have Glenn and Rachel
down again soon, we had such a great time and wished they could have
stayed longer.

A little post to my Father this day after father’s day. Of course it
is the day after Father’s Day, but being that we live in California
now it makes it tough to spend that day with him (he was golfing in
Bend, OR anyway). So, in his honor and in someway to celebrate my new
father-to-be status, we all hopped in Big Red and headed down the road
to Ojai. Big Red was the name my dad gave the truck shortly after he
bought it back in 1987 or ‘88. I was in fifth grade when he bought
the truck and I can remember many of Father’s Days driving the
mountain roads in Big Red. Whether we were in Montana or Washington,
the truck was always a focal point for the day’s special activities.
I really wished I could have spent yesterday with my Dad, I wish we
could have jumped into Big Red and headed up to Lake Casitas and threw
the kayaks in the water. Living in California, I miss not being able
to see my dad as frequently as I could when I lived up in Washington.
However, he has to take a lot responsibility for where I am today. It
was his example of confidence and trust in God’s provision for our
family, that has enabled me to live in that same confidence.
Certainly more that I probably give him credit for. The older I get,
the more of a “risk taker” he seems. Today, I feel like I need to sit
down with him and have explain to me where he gets his energy and
faith for the challenges he chooses to tackle. Yet through it all, he
continues to provide.
I also believe my dad was the example that gave me the confidence to
pick up and move to California. Recognizing that he took our family
through a similar “life altering” move from Montana to Washington, I
think that experience helped me to rationalize moving away from my
comfortable life in Washington, living near friends and family, my
house and property, etc., etc.
I certainly miss my dad, and not being near him to golf on Father’s
Day is something that makes living at this distance so difficult, but
I’m hopeful that our grandson will provide significant incentive for
him to plan on making the trip to California more often!
Happy Father’s Day Dad!

I recently returned from a business trip to Colombia to visit flower
farms near Bogota and Medillin. I coordinated this trip with my
counterpart organization in Colombia and took 15 growers from
California wit me. We had a wonderful time. This picture was taken
during a lunch we had a one of the flower company’s schools, where the
students their put on quite the show for our group.

This Memorial Weekend we have stuck close to home. Why not, it’s
Santa Barbara. However, I was supposed to be going on a 4×4 trip
through our local Land Rover dealer near here. It was canceled, so
Tarah decided she wanted to go hiking. Amazing. She’s 24 weeks along
and still game for taking the dogs out on the trail. So we loaded
everyone up in Big Red and headed up to the trail head. We didn’t do
the entire loop, but we did a good portion of it. I was proud of
her. I know pregnant ladies can go jogging and do all kinds of stuff,
but its pretty amazing nonetheless. I’m not sure I would say that I’d
be up to go on a 5 mile hike while pregnant.
And tomorrow. . .bike ride to Santa Barbara. She’s crazy, but I love
her.

This year Tarah and I have signed up to participate in Relay for Life,
which is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. I
participated in this event in Shelton and was really impressed with
the community involvement and support for such an important cause. It
seems we all have been impacted by cancer in some way, either directly
or through the experience of someone we love. I am almost certain
that cancer will impact my family directly in the future, which is why
finding the cure is so important and efforts like these are critical
to help achieve and support that goal.
So, my team is team FLOWER POWER. No surprise as to how I’ve arrived
at that name, as my team will include people from the local flower
industry here in Carpinteria. It should be a great time, but our team
fundraising goal is $1750.00 and we can use everyone’s help to get us
there. Donating is made easy through an awesome website we have for
our team: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/Flower_Power
Click on that website and you can see who is on our team, how much
money we’ve raised, purchase a luminaria bag and donate to our team
goal.
If you’d like to learn more about Relay for Life, click here and thank
you in advance for your support!

Here is my friend Brandon from Utah enjoying a beautiful day in sunny
Carpinteria, partaking in one of Carpinteria’s famous local’s spots,
The Surf Dog. You can see by the smile on his face that this
experience is like a kid in a candy store.
Welcome to Carpinteria Brandon!

This weekend I am spending my time at UC Davis learning about the science of flowers, rehydration, temp storage flower food, etc. Goodtimes.
There are about 15 students in the program from all over the world all here to conduct and witness a variety of experiments on flowers.
